The official Geelong Winery Region encompasses three sub-regions - Moorabool Valley, Surf Coast and The Bellarine. The Geelong Winery Region covers a fairly diverse range of soils, climates and altitudes which gives rise to the wide variety of wines available. With a long history of grape growing and wine production, including an unhappy period when disease led to massive destruction and drastic reduction of vines, boutique vineyards and niche wineries are not only popping up across the region, they are also producing some fantastic award-winning wines. Generally offering cool-climate wines, the most common red grape varieties are Pinot Noir, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon while the most common white grapes are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling. The principal wine styles are Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Chardonnay. For further information on the Geelong Winery Region, see the Wine Geelong website - winegeelong.com.au A Taste of the Region is not a wine store, so we do not intend to try offering all the regional wines from Southwest Victoria - our philosophy is to concentrate on the best ones, be that by recommendation, medals and awards from wine judges and competitions, or high ratings by wine reviewers such as James Halliday and his Australian Wine Companion. Even so, we are spoilt for choice, and there are many more wines available than our online store shows! We also like to add other fabulous local produce, so that you can literally get "a taste of the region" and more than just a fine wine for a special meal. Southwest Victoria has many natural attractions that make it a fantastic location for tours, trips, holidays and vacations. These include wine tours and food trails - have a look at the Visit Victoria website for a wealth of ideas and information. |
